The World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) Annual General Meeting starts this Sunday, October 25. The WECP, which unites 23 energy hub cities from the 19 major oil-producing countries in the world, will celebrate 20 years of partnership in Rio de Janeiro. There are 14 delegations from member cities confirmed, 9 of them led by mayors.
According to the mayor of Stavanger, Norway, and current WECP President, Christine Sagen Helgø, the WECP meeting in Rio de Janeiro is timely and represents an opportunity for member cities to compare best practices in order to deal with challenges in the energy sector. “Declining oil prices and reduced activity in the oil sector have resulted in rising unemployment for many of the WECP cities. This situation forces us to discuss how we can continue our support for the energy sector and at the same facilitate knowledge and technology transfer from the sector to foster growth and innovation in other sectors of our societies”, stated Mayor Helgø.
For that, Rio Negócios is including in the WECP program a special edition of Rio Conferences – a set of business seminars tailored to fit the WECP AGM´s content – which will discuss three themes: Oil & Gas, Research & Development and Urban Transformation Projects. The conferences will offer discussions on the current context of the O&G industry in Brazil and worldwide, from the view of international companies and authorities; experiences with urban transformation projects; and promote debates on examples of public policies for the O&G sector as well as the role of R&D in the current O&G market context.
Rio Negócios expects to gather 400 participants from 150 companies connected to the oil and gas sector, especially operators, suppliers and representative and academic institutions.
WECP meetings will take place between October 25 and 28, with events in the GE Global Research Center, at UFRJ Technology Park, and Riocentro.
