The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), partnered with Chevron, has made a US$ 1 million investment in two new geomechanics laboratories with state of the art equipment. The new spaces will be used for research in geology and oil, mechanical and civil engineering, in undergraduate and graduate courses, starting next semester.

Among the new equipment stands out the triaxial testing unit – which enables compression tests in rock samples under elevated pressure and temperature conditions – the only one available in Brazilian universities. “In the first lab, we’ll prepare the rock for testing, and in the other we’ll analyze the different preoperties of the rock in adverse conditions”, explained the coordinator of the Oil Engineering and Technology Group (GTEP), professor Sérgio Fontoura.
