The 'Mutirão de Reflorestamento' (Reforestation) program exists since 1984. Since its creation, more than 5 million seedlings have been planted.  The total reforested area is equal to 52% of the Tijuca National Park or five times the area of Copacabana.

32% of the seedlings were planted in Planning Area 3 which concentrates 38% of the municipality's total population and presents the smallest vegetal coverage.
