The World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) annual meeting starts this Sunday (25/10) and will have the presence of nine Mayors from cities in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. WECP, the entity which unites 23 energy hub cities from 19 of the main oil-producing countries in the world, will celebrate 20 years of partnership in Rio de Janeiro. Among the confirmed delegations are the cities of Houston (USA), Dammam (Saudi Arabia), Doha (Qatar), Karamay, Dongying and Daqing (China), Halifax and Calgary (Canada), Aberdeen (Scotland), Atyrau (Kazakhstan), Esbjerg (Denmark), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Stavanger (Norway), Cape Town (South Africa) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
For the Mayor of Stavanger and current WECP President, Christine Sagen Helgø, the WECP meeting in Rio de Janeiro is timely and representatives an opportunity for member cities to exchange best practices, with the goal of dealing with the challenges of the energy sector. “Declining oil prices and reduced activity in the oil sector have resulted in rising unemployment for many of the WECP cities. This situation forces us to discuss how we can continue our support for the energy sector and at the same facilitate knowledge and technology transfer from the sector to foster growth and innovation in other sectors of our societies”, stated Mayor Helgø.
For that, Rio Negócios is including in the WECP program a special edition of Rio Conferences, a set of business seminars tailored to fit the WECP AGM´s content, which will discuss three themes: Oil & Gas, Research & Development and Urban Transformation Projects. The conferences will offer discussions on the current context of the O&G industry in Brazil and worldwide, with the view of international companies and authorities; experiences with urban transformation projects; and promote debates on examples of public policies for the O&G sector as well as the role of R&D in the current O&G market context.
Rio Negócios expects to gather 400 participants from 150 companies connected to the oil and gas sector, especially operators, suppliers and representative and academic institutions. There are 15 confirmed government and commercial delegations from the member cities, 9 of them led by Mayors.
The annual WECP meeting will take place between October 25 and 28, with events in the GE Global Research Center, at UFRJ Technology Park, and Riocentro.
