It is easily the best MMA card of this year thus far on Saturday night from Las Vegas as a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and UFC 235 is highlighted by contender Anthony Smith.
The five-fight main card is expected to begin at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view. Following is a peek at those bouts — and the previous prelim — and their Sports Interaction UFC odds.
Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith
Records: Jones (23-1), Smith (31-13)
Section: Light heavyweight
UFC Odds: Jones -850, Smith +500 Prediction: Jones by choice Martial arts lost one of its greats recently to retirement in Georges St-Pierre, surely the Canadian MMA fighter. GSP is on the brief list of the finest of irrespective of division. The very best? One could make an argument for the 31-year-old Jones. From the Octagon, he has no peer. He just seems to derail his career out of it, whether due to drug tests that are failing or legal problems. Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history, and he never lost it in the Octagon. But a failed drug test could come out after Jones beat on Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 and Jones was suspended and stripped of the heavyweight belt.
It was made by jones back with a third-round knockout of Alexander Gustafsson in December, but that arrived with an asterisk. Jones tested positive and also the state of Nevada wouldn’t give a licence to fight to him. So the entire card, in a unprecedented move, was altered to Los Angeles. The 30-year-old Smith is a former middleweight that has fought at pounds for under a year. He is on an impressive series over Mauricio Rua, Volkan Oezdemir and Rashad Evans. There is some discussion Jones may face Cormier, the heavyweight champ, with a win although Jones (unofficially) has beaten him twice .
