Last month, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and EMC signed a Technical and Scientific Cooperation agreement, through which the company will work with government agencies, universities and private Brazilian companies. The aim is to undertake joint initiatives related to research , development and innovation in technologies of Big Data, Cloud Computing, and Information Security.

    • Big Data can be defined as a large volume of data that can be quickly adjusted and transformed into information. The Rio Operations Center is an example of the implementation of Big Data for troubleshooting.

The Study produced by IDC Digital Universe and sponsored by EMC points out that:

    • The digital universe, where the data is analyzed and transformed into Big Data, will reach up until 40 zetabytes by 2020, equivalent to 57 times the amount of all the grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth.
    • If we could save all 40 ZB on Blu-Ray today, the weight of these discs would be the same as 424 carriers.
    • In 2020, emerging markets will replace the developed countries as the main data generators in the world.
    • The investment in IT hardware, software, services, and telecommunications and teams, which is considered the infrastructure of the digital universe will grow by 40% until 2020.
    • Currently, only 3% of potentially useful data of the digital universe are marked, and an even smaller amount is analyzed by Big Data. It is predicted that by 2020, 33% of the digital universe will have the value of Big Data, if identified and analyzed.
    • Less than 20% of the digital universe is protected.
    • In 2020, 62% of the digital universe will be attributed to emerging markets.
